Helping give back to charities

I was asked to review a new, innovative auction website called Bidaroo.com. The founder, Rob Gough recently found himself battling cancer and as a way of thanking the charities that helped him and his family, he created this website so people can purchase awesome products at bargain prices while giving back to charities that help families in time of need.

The idea of the site is to bid on products that are 80 - 90% below retail price. To win the charity auction, you need to be the highest unique bid and in most cases, the shipping of the product is free.

At least 25% of the proceeds go to charity and as well as giving back to the charities, Rob’s aim is to donate money to help find a cure for cancer.

I think this is a terrific way to help charities that help people.

I want to go!

I am so jealous! I have been reading all about bloggers’ conventions where bloggers meet up and stay in one of the fabulous Las Vegas hotels for a few days and have a great time getting to know each other and learning about blogging. I would love to attend one year just to say that I have been! Of course I would have to decide whether it would be a family trip or a solo one.

Keeping up with technology

I had to see my doctor today to get another script for my happy pill. Usually when I go, I don’t have to wait too long. It’s a surgery with two doctors and they’re both good at keeping to the appointment times.

But today when I was sitting waiting, I was watching the receptionist scurry around, looking through files after files in the shelving that lines the walls in her office. It didn’t long to realise that she couldn’t find a patient’s file…and I was SO hoping that it wasn’t mine that she was looking for. But because I am quite unlucky, the missing file WAS mine and because they keep families together, my children’s information was missing too.

I was glad I wasn’t in too much of a hurry because I would have started getting quite annoyed but instead I just sat and watched her get flustered and eventually find my file in a pile of patients’ files that had for some reason been put aside to be updated.

Now if they kept up with technology and used VirMedice, the leading EMR software consultant, they could convert all the paper records into electronic health records and simplify everything by e-Prescribing.

That way, they wouldn’t have to worry about files going missing or, heaven forbid, the fish & chip shop next door catching fire and all the records getting destroyed.

So, after waiting one hour after my original appointment time, I only spent five minutes with the doctor while she checked my blood pressure and gave me my script!

Domain registration

I mentioned in one of my previous posts that I wanted to get back into digital scrapbooking. Instead of cluttering up my current sites with my designs, I was thinking of creating a site just for showcasing my scrapbook pages. So, this morning I’ve been checking out sites that offer domain registration to see if I can get a better deal compared to the site I usually purchase my domains from.

Personally I prefer my sites to be .net but there are many extensions to choose from that will suit different sites. I also think that the domain name is very important. I like sites that have memorable domain names so it’s easy to find them again if you don’t happen to bookmark the site when you first come across it. If I do happen to find a site that offers a better service and cheaper prices for domain registration, I’ll have to check also that the domain transfer process is a simple one because I’m not that IT-savvy!

I need a hobby

I think I might start doing digital scrapbooking again. I used to do traditional scrapbooking but because I don’t have the room to leave everything out, I was always unpacking and packing the supplies. It just became too much of a pain! At least with digital scrapbooking there’s no mess!

I need to buy a graphics program. I like using Photoshop Elements so I’ll have to go price that. I found Paint Shop Pro (or whatever the new version is called) was a bit too technical for me. I just like to drag and drop my photos and elements into place without too much fuss.

I started (traditional) scrapbooking the baby’s first year so I’ll finish that one and then do the rest digitally. I like the fact that if anyone in the family wants a copy of the scrapbook, I just need to print as many copies as I need without having to make the pages from scratch.

Have you tried scrapbooking?

Don’t have time for MSN

It’s been probably around six months since I turned on my MSN.

I feel slack for neglecting my chat pals but I’ve been busy working on my blogs and when I’m on a roll, I don’t like to be disturbed otherwise I lose my focus. Maybe I should set a time for MSN so I get a chance to have a chat through the day.

My kids have got me added on their buddy lists and as soon as they see me sign in, they bug me with silly messages. I’ve been known to block them and then I hear “hey! you blocked me!”

Well, the blovk button is there for a reason…lol

Smorty

There are a lot of paid blogging sites that offer bloggers the opportunity to make money through blog advertising. Advertisers know the advantage of getting exposure through blogs and offer to pay for bloggers to write about their opinions on various products and services. You need to be careful though when choosing to work with a paid blogging site. There are some out there that do not have good reputations.

One of my favourite paid blogging sites is Smorty. I believe it’s one of the better paid blogging sites. You have the choice to accept or decline any available offers so you don’t have to write about products and services that you don’t agree with. I’ve been blogging with them for about six months and I enjoy the variety of jobs that have offered to me. Having the opportunity to write abut different products and services introduces me to sites I would otherwise not have come across. Payments are made weekly into your paypal account.

If you’re interested in blogging for money, check out Smorty. I recommend it!

What do you think of the new look?

I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Katy and Mindy @ kissmycode.com. This cute theme is one of their creations and I don’t think I could go more ‘pinker’ if I tried!

These ladies are amazing! I had some coding problems with my Mummified Times Five blog and instead of just telling me what I needed to do in a whole lot of geeky computer coding speak that I wouldn’t understand, they basically wrote my code out for me, even with my links and all, and told me exactly where to cut and paste it to fix my problems!

And THEN, when I purchased some matching badges, I received an email with my badges in what seemed like a blink of an eye!

Have I said how amazing these women are??!!

If you’re after some great looking themes for your blog, I recommend you check out Kiss My Code.
